Although polymer demand has more than doubled in the past 10 years to around 7 million metric tons, plastics consumption in India is still in its early stages compared with the more developed markets around the world. Indian consumption per capita is at around 5-6kg, whereas US is over 100kg and China and Brazil sit at around 30kg.

However with its massive population and growing economy plastics demand is already growing at over 12% per annum and set to continue growing for many years to come. Machinery and equipment suppliers are eying up a lucrative and expanding plastics processing industry. Well over 30,000 processing machines were installed in the past decade with a further 40,000 plus machines expected to be installed before 2015.

This amounts to huge opportunity for both indigenous Indian companies in the industry as well as established international players. The plastics trade media in India is equally buoyant and will be present in force at PlastIndia as will EMG’s international team who will be at the event supporting clients and meeting new contacts.
